The Love Fix

Apr 29, 2022

Carla’s big sister Stephanie jumps on at the top of the show, to give the good ‘ole sister stamp of approval to The Love Fix. Then, Sherry and Carla take a Love Fix question from someone who is married, but things don’t feel like they are improving, especially in therapy. Then, they welcome Brynn Cicippio, LMFT and recovery specialist. Brynn is the founder and owner of BCA Therapy, a group private practice that sees Pennsylvania clients and residents in both in-person and telehealth. Brynn talks about how she got into supporting individuals, couples, and families to recover from the trauma left after an affair, addiction, and narcissistic abuse. She talks with Carla and Sherry about how to learn to trust your gut, what true self-care looks like, and how to cut off a narcissistic of what she calls their “narcissistic supply”.

What You’ll Hear In This Episode:

  • Brynn talks about her life as a former probation and parole officer, and how that set her on a course to be interested in working with the topics of betrayal, infidelity, narcissistic abuse, and toxic relationships.
  • How can being with a narcissist actually change someone’s attachment style?
  • Yes, narcissists can know how to model empathy and pro-social behaviors instead of actually feeling those things. What are some red flags to look out for?
  • Find out how to, along with how to work with Sherry and Carla on overcoming codependency, dating, break-ups, healing from toxic relationships, and gaining confidence.
  • A lot of individuals who have experienced narcissistic abuse use alcohol and drugs as a coping skill in response.
  • What does love bombing look like in a longer relationship?
  • When it’s necessary to interact with a narcissist, less is better. Make your meeting very brief, clear, and factual.
  • Brynn describes what she calls “a narcissistic supply” where the narcissist needs validation from even more than one outside source, often resulting in many affairs.
  • The three types of self-care talking to yourself with love and compassion.
  • Bubble baths and paying your bills are great for self-care, but you really have to first look at how you are talking to yourself. If you are tearing yourself down, the nice things won’t mean anything.
